Sandra Jane Johnson, 77, of Dixon, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021, at her home on the Rock River surrounded by her husband and children.
She loved Easter and all it means. Sandra was active in her family’s lives, active in her neighborhood, active in her church, active in her community. She worked for many years at local businesses doing everything from keypunching to accounting before her retirement in 2000.
Sandra was born April 27, 1943, in Rockford, IL, the daughter of Amos and Margaret “Peggy” (Burrus) Bensen. She was proud to grow up in the “Victory Homes” built during World War II. Her older sister, Linda, was her best friend until she died in a tragic car accident when Sandra was only 22 years old. Sandra married Terry Johnson on October 19, 1962, in Rockford where they met when she was serving at the Walgreens lunch counter. While raising four children, Terry and Sandra were founding members of an informal social club “Spin Drifters” named after the many bicycling and picnicking events the friends and families enjoyed together. She loved her home on the river watching the birds, the wildlife, and river activity. She was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Dixon. Above all, she adored her family and friends. She cherished hosting holiday gatherings, playing games, cooking, and sharing meals with all those she loved.
Sandra is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 58 years, Terry Johnson; four children, Bruce (Michele) Johnson of Rockford, IL, Burton (Ann Carlson) Johnson of Kirkland, IL, Carl Amos (Diana) Johnson of Greenfield, NH, Becky (David) Hage of Dixon, IL; ten grandchildren, Alyssa Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Amber Johnson, Jesse Behnke, Savannah Johnson, Blake Johnson, Abigail Johnson, Elijah Johnson, Christian (Hope) Hage, Noah Hage; two great-grandchildren, Kara and Bria Behnke; many nieces and nephews.
