Park District Applies for $5 mil Grant, If Achieved, Community Center Construction Would Begin in July

The Dixon Park District and Executive Director Duane Long has had a dream and goal of building a Community Center.  Things seemed to be completely on hold once the district decided to not have a referendum to increase the size of the park district to the equal the size of the school district.

At Wednesdays Park Board meeting Long pointed out there may be new life in the Community Center and if things work out, construction could begin in July.  Long said they have applied for what is called a Fast Track Grant from the State of Illinois.  The grant is worth $5 million with no matching funds.  Long told the board this was a chance and they took it.

The district also made changes to the original design of the Community Center.  The new design has a walking path around the basketball courts.  It also allows things such as hoops, volleyball nets and other things being stored in the ceiling.

If they get the grant Long says they will begin construction on July 31st and will be completed 8 months later on March 31 of 2021.
