Filling Vacant Seat on Lee County Board Not as Smooth as Hoped

Getting a couple of vacant seats filled on the Lee County Board did not go as smoothly as it could have for one of the candidates at their Thursday night meeting.

At the beginning of the meeting the board had to approve the replacements to fill the seats previously held by Greg Witzleb and Gerald Leffleman.   Danielle Allen passed with flying colors.  For Mike Broome it was a different story.

According to County Chair John Nicholson, Republican County Chair Jennifer Dallas did not get her recommendations in writing to Nicholson in a timely manner.  By the time she did, Broome had already been picked by Nicholson.  The recommendation from the party was Keene Hudson.  Nicholson said he thought at first that there might be a conflict of interest because Hudson already works for the county.

The State’s Attorney informed Nicholson that Hudson had what is called Compatibility of Office.

Some board members still pushed Hudson and others felt since Broome is not sure if he will seek office in the fall, why should he have the seat for just a short time.  Broome was approved on a 12-8 vote with 2 abstaining.
