Postponing Lee County Property Taxes This Year May Do More Harm Than Good

The Federal Government has postponed when your income taxes need to be filed and paid till July, but, no delay will be made for your local property taxes.

Lee County Treasurer Paula Meyer said it was decided not to delay the taxes this year in spite of the current pandemic.  She said it would be more harmful to postpone them then it would be to keep the normal dates.

Many organizations such as local school districts, police, fire and city workers would be unable to have the money to do their job if the taxes are postponed.  Meyer said the taxes will be going out soon and the June 26th and September 2nd dates are set.

Meyer understands that some folks may find paying the taxes difficult this year because of being unemployed due to the pandemic.  She said the Lee County Board had been looking into ways to provide some relief, but, not much can be done at this point.

The Old Lee County Courthouse is still closed so the best way to make your payment is by mail or online.  Meyer said if you have to come to the courthouse they will take the payment but only through a first floor window.
