One Killed, One With Life Threatening Injuries after Vehicle and Train Accident Saturday

On Saturday at about 12:35 pm, Whiteside County Deputies responded to the railroad crossing at Moline Road and Smit Road for crash between a train and passenger vehicle.

Deputies say the male drive 65, of Erie was northbound on Smit Road near Moline Road , when the vehicle traveled through railroad crossing. The passenger vehicle was struck on the driver’s side door by an eastbound Burlington Northern Train. The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead on scene by Whiteside County Coroner’s Office.

A female 16 years old, was the front seat passenger and a family member, of the driver, was airlifted from the scene by Medforce to Iowa City for life threatening injuries.

The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Erie Fire/EMS, Erie Police Department, and the Illinois State Police.

The crash remains under investigation by the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office. No names will be released until after 8am on Monday morning .
