Demmer Takes Aim at Prescription Drug Costs and Insurance Company Delays

State Representative Tom Demmer of Dixon recently said the rising cost of health care and prescription drugs is one of the biggest issues facing people of Illinois.

Demmer this week sponsored and co-sponsored two pieces of legislation aimed at lowering costs and speeding up authorization time for medical procedures.  The first pieces of legislation, said Demmer, would make it illegal for name brand prescription drug companies to make deals with generic drug companies to keep the generic brands off the market.

Rep. Greg Harris of Chicago sponsored legislation that Demmer is a co-sponsor of that creates the Prior Authorization Reform Act.  Demmer said every patient needs to fill out a form to be given to their insurance company for authorization for the procedure to be given.  Demmer said this causes un-needed delays.  The act would speed up the authorization process by putting insurance companies on a strict timeline for them to respond to requests.
