Troopers Say Car Became Stuck on Tracks and Was Hit by a Train

Shortly after 11pm Monday Illinois State Police Troopers responded to Perry Road at Tyler Street in Steward for a report of a vehicle struck by a train.

Troopers located the driver, 77 year old James F. Bossart of Clinton Township, Michigan, uninjured. Bossart was traveling eastbound on Perry Road when he veered off the roadway while negotiating the curve near the railroad tracks.

Bossart’s vehicle became disabled on the railroad tracks and he was unable to maneuver the vehicle back onto the roadway. Bossart stated he observed a train traveling westbound so he exited his vehicle. A Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train struck Bossart’s vehicle.

Bossart was cited for improper lane usage. Illinois State Police were assisted on scene by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Steward Fire Department, and Rochelle Fire Department.
