Jorge Serena Garibay, 88, of Sterling, died on Sunday morning, June 24, 2018 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.
He was born on January 25, 1930 in Zamora, Michoacan, Mexico to Ramon Garibay Ortega and Emilia Serena Izarraraz. He was united in marriage to Maria Pilar Silva on October 13, 1956 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Chicago. Mary preceded him in death on January 24, 2014. Jorge was an electrician for over 50 years and had worked for Belke Manufacturing in Chicago. Jorge enjoyed traveling to see his family in Mexico and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, Illinois.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Rosemarie (Angel) Molina of Niles and Maria Teresa (Martin) Castaneda of Mustang, Okla.; his sons, George J. Garibay of Chicago, William J. Garibay of Aurora and Robert Garibay of Plainfield; his sisters, Ernestina Alvarez Garibay and Celia Paz Garibay both of Zamora, Mexico; a brother Guillermo Garibay of Reynosa, Mexico; his brothers, Ramon, Francisco and Guillermo Garibay; his sisters, Ernestina Alvarez Garibay, Evangelina Garibay, Emelia Garibay, Angelina Paz Garibay and Celia Paz Garibay, and Dolores Garibay, his brother-in-law Al (Juanita) Silva and family of Sterling; his sisters-in-law, Carmen Silva Laffey and family and Lupe Garibay and family.
His grandchildren, Megan Molina, Alyssa (Ramon) Molina, Michael (Meghan) Garibay, Susy Castaneda, Veronica (Quinn) Castaneda-Allensworth, Tessy Castaneda, Mark Castaneda, Alex Garibay, Aden Garibay, Angel Solis, Fabian Solis, Rico Berrios, Abbey Mertes and Abel Solis; his great grandchildren, Logan Garibay, Rosie Garibay, Avery Garibay, Griffin Garibay, Zion Allensworth, Zoe Allensworth, Alberto Serrano, Bella Serrano and Angel Serrano; special family, Tony and Mary Ortiz, Fina, Connie, John, Victor, Juanita and Nash Castaneda, Gonzalo and Lucy Lemus;
Also surviving are his family in Indiana, Ramon and Lupe Garibay, Emily and Nicholas Garibay, Ramon (Karen) Garibay, Fred (the late Maria) Brown and Sherry Brown, Laura (Tim) Hardesty) and Yolanda Garibay.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ramon and Emilia Garibay; his wife, Mary Garibay.
Visitation will be from 8:30-10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 26th at the McDonald Funeral Home, 505 1st Avenue in Sterling. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM in St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling with Reverend Jorge Bravo, celebrant, officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling. A memorial has been established in his memory to the American Cancer Society or the Disabled Veterans.
