Paul Van Oosten, 94, of Sterling, died on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Rock River Home and Hospice.
He was born on June 5, 1923 in Newton Township to Adolf and Marie (Lantinga) Van Oosten. He married Frances Stultz on November 15, 1946 in Dixon.
Paul served proudly in the US Marine Corps during WWII during China, Guam and Iwojima. He was a concrete driver for Sterling-Rock Falls Ready Mix for 35 years until retiring in 1995.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Sterling American Legion Post 296 and the VFW. Paul was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, loved to garden and was a hard worker who loved his family. He enjoyed pitching softball and played horseshoes, earning the championship for Whiteside County. He and Frances enjoyed going to Iwojima conventions.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; daughters, Paula (Allan) Millerschoen of Sterling, Robin (Doug) McDuffy of Polo and a daughter in law, Sheri Van Oosten of Edmund, OK; sons, Tom Van Oosten of Sterling and Scott (Lori) Van Oosten of Sterling; grandchildren, Staci Bell, Shane (Natalie) Van Oosten, Shannon (Justin) McKenzie, Jenny (Larry) Thome, Michelle (Preston) Zigler, Kayla (Keenan) Blakeslee, Kari McDuffy, Avery Van Oosten and Paige Mewhirter; 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Stanley, 5 brothers and 7 sisters.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Gathering of family and friends will be from 9-10 AM Saturday, June 23 at McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling. A memorial service will follow at 10 AM in the funeral home with Pastor Brad Wilson, officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon with full military honors. A memorial has been established in his memory.
