For nearly three years, people in Byron have wondered who was responsible for the arson fire that claimed the life of a 37 year old mother and her 3 year old son. As of Wednesday the answer may have been given.
In the early morning hours of October 19 of 2016 in Byron Police and Fire as well as Ogle County Sheriff Deputies responded to a house fire at 2020 Silverthorne Drive in Byron. Authorities learned the fire took the life of Margaret “Maggie” Meyer and Amos Meyer.
After an investigation the fire was declared an arson and murder. On Wednesday, almost three years to the day,
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle announced they have arrested the former husband and father, 37 year old Duane “DC” Meyer. Meyer was charged with 4 counts of 1st Degree Murder, 2 counts of Aggravated Arson and 1 count of Concealment of a Homicidal Death.
VanVickle added that Meyer was arrested without incident and when he was arrested Deputies discovered a loaded firearm. Meyer was also charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said the investigation was ongoing until a few weeks ago and it produced thousands of pages of documents.
Meyer was arraigned Wednesday afternoon. Morrow said if he is convicted Meyer would receive natural life in prison. Bond was set at $10 million.
