Hiring Committee Submits Name of New Dixon Municipal Band Director

An ad hoc hiring committee has recommended that Jon James be chosen as the next director of the Dixon Municipal Band. Mayor Arellano intends to follow that recommendation and make the appointment at Monday’s city council meeting.

Jon James comes to Dixon with 26 years of band teaching/conducting experience. Mr. James graduated from Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. He started out his professional tenure as a music teacher in the Polo Community Schools in 1992, and both he and his wife have been active in the Sauk Valley area music community.

The hiring committee was comprised of Ruth Johnson, Donald Burnett, and Paul Whitcombe. Each is a long time member of the Dixon Municipal Band.

Mayor Arellano stated, “The hiring committee felt Mr. James’s extensive experience would be a great asset. In addition to his leadership, he will provide mentorship for next generation of band members and leaders.”

The municipal band season has already begun. Per ordinance, the band director position serves a one-year term that expires at the end of each fiscal year.
