The Dixon School system has had school nurses for a very long time. There are no plans of ever getting rid of them as they are needed for the students who need medication, get an slight injury on the playground or give relief when a student is not feeling well.
A new program may be coming to Dixon Schools which would take the medical availability a step further. During the most recent School Board meeting personnel from KSB Hospital presented a plan for what is called a School Based Health Center. The idea is to have a full medical clinic onsite at the High School said Superintendent Margo Empen.
The Health Clinic would be open 5 days a week year around. Empen says if a student, for example, does not have the proper physical which could bar them from attending classes, they can get the service immediately at the clinic.
In another way, if a student has mental illness needs the social workers and counselors would be there to render the aid they may need.
The entire plan hinges on a $800,000 grant KSB Hospital is seeking. The grant would take care of the financial needs for the staff. Empen says all the district would be responsible for would be to provide the space and the utilities.
