Rev. Vernon Fred Dean, of Franklin Grove, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018, one day after his 90th birthday, at Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon, IL.
He was a meat cutter at Jewel for over 30 years and was called into the ministry in 1988, and the last church he pastored was the Franklin Grove Church of the Brethren, prior to his retirement in 2014.
Vernon was born July 7, 1928, in Chicago, IL, the son of Fred Vernon and Margaret Ruth (Schmidt) Dean. He married Edna Fay Lein on June 18, 1955, in Chicago. Vernon was very involved in the church and enjoyed solving sudoku and crossword puzzles. He served his country in the United States Army and was a member of VFW Post #540 in Dixon. Vernon was a member of the Meat Cutter’s Union, served as a Boy Scout Leader, and attended the Dixon Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edna Dean of Franklin Grove; one son, Gary (Martha) Dean of Callaway, VA; one daughter, Evelyn Leyva of Lombard; five grandchildren, Joshua, Micah, and Aaron Dean, James Leyva, Anthony (Angela) Leyva; one sister, Susan (Gregory) Zalewski of Addison; and three nieces, Marlyce Hall, Mirela Enz, and Agata Foster.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; one son as a toddler, Bruce Allan Dean; and one brother, Allan Dean.
Visitation will be from 10-11:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at the Dixon Church of the Brethren, followed by a 11:00 a.m., funeral service, at the church, with the Rev. Blaine Miner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oakridge/Glen Oak Cemetery in Hillside, IL, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Camp Emmaus in Mt. Morris, IL.
